Starting university – watch the webinar on how to reduce the stress and anxiety
30 September 2016 Kate Dunn
This Human Givens webinar provides valuable advice and supportive information for parents whose sons and daughters may either be planning to go to university in the future, or may have already recently started their new courses. Parents can often feel overlooked in this process, especially as universities and colleges may seem reluctant to communicate directly with them about their loved ones. There are good reasons for this, which are covered in the webinar, but they can leave parents feeling unheard and even more worried, with nowhere to turn to for help, at a critical and sometimes upsetting time for them.
The webinar covers many of the areas of concern that parents may experience both for themselves and for their sons and daughters – including the impact of transitions, loneliness, social and peer-group pressures, self-care needs, learning styles and expectations of universities, dealing with apparent changes in personality and identity, how to find a manage a new role for everyone in the family, family break-up following students leaving home and much more. Explanations are given for why challenges arise and suggestions for a variety of ways of managing these within families and beyond are offered. Question and answer interludes occur throughout the webinar where parents have an opportunity to raise specific concerns and receive advice. In my experience, these are the kinds of questions that can frequently arise for parents and the answers provided are helpful, practical and reassuring. The presenter, Gareth Hughes, is currently a university counsellor and gives a good account of how services such as the one in which he works understand the needs of young people and their families and provide valuable resources to help support students with their experiences.
